Thrifty Thursday - Valentines Meringue

Need a cheap gift to give some loved-ones or coworkers?!

Here's the thing to show you care!

Valentine's Heart Meringue!

. . .

So, I got this idea from a book I found out the public library to make snowflake meringue.

You'll need:
- 2 medium size eggs
- white sugar (caster if you can get it)
- pan
- parchment paper
- mixer
- freezer bag
- scissors
- rubber band
- cake decorating tip (not required)

First, we're going to set the oven to 400 degrees F.

Now, put 3/4 cup of sugar onto a pan.

Spread it out onto the pan, and then once your oven reaches 400 degrees, put it in the oven.

Take 2 medium size eggs, and divide the yolk from the egg whites.

Ta Da!!!

Place the egg whites into the mixer, and mix on high until it becomes "frothy".

Once the egg whites are frothy, put the (hot) sugar directly into the egg whites.

Set your oven down to 225 degrees.

Beat until the mixture can form peaks. It should be cold!

While the egg whites and sugar are in the mixer, cut a very small triangle in the corner of the freezer bag.

Push the cake decorating tip into the corner of the bag, and secure a rubber band around the bottom of the tip. (This takes some patience.)

*Tip - make sure the rubber band if far enough down on the nozzle so that it doesn't slip.

Once you're done making the bag, and the mixture is making peaks, put the mixture into the "piping bag".

Pipe hearts (or whatever shape you would like) onto the parchment paper put into the oven.

Set a timer for 45 minutes.

After 45 minutes, open the oven. DO NOT TAKE OUT THEM OUT OF THE OVEN!!!!

I accidentally took the meringue out of the oven, therefore they cracked due to the drastic temperature change.

Keep the oven door open and let them slowly cool in the oven for 30 minutes.

Bag them however you would like! I just used some sandwich bags and used a permanent marker to say,  "Happy Valentines Day", "Love you", and "Don't go breaking my heart" (for the ones that REALLY cracked!

There are MUCH cuter ways to bags these up, but this is what I had at the time.

I hope you enjoy and make some of these treats for friends, family, or yourself this Valentines Day!

Enjoy!
