Worshipful Ways Wednesdays - Good Communication Skills
Having good communication skills is actually a way we can worship God!
When we can communicate and relate better with others, we can minster/witness to them in a much better/healtier way! Even if it's to your friends and family, good communication skills can go far.
. . .
I've learned a lot of communication skills from my psychology classes.
(In case you didn't know, I have a degree in psychology.)
My favorite class was my Communications class in college. This is where I learned some very valuable lessons to do with communication.
. . .
The book we used was called Looking Out/Looking In by Ronald B. Adler and Russell F. Proctor II.
This was/is my favorite textbook.
It reads more like a narrative than a regular old textbook, and it is packed FULL of great communication lessons and tips!
You buy it on amazon!
. . .
One of the things I can still remember learning in class
(and reading in the book) was the idea of noise.
. . .
When we "send" a "message" to a "receiver", whether it's verbal or nonverbal,
there can often be what's called noise.
Noise is something that disrupts the message. This can be all sorts of things; emotions, bad days, periods, breakups, knowledge, anything really!
It's so easy to thing that when you send a message, the receiver should understand it perfectly!
That so often is NOT what happens. Noise gets in the way and then you have miscommunication.
Miscommunication can cause fights, arguments, break-ups, divorce, sadness,... so much bad!
That's why it's our job to make sure that when we send a message,
we fight off as much noise as we possibly can.
. . .
This is just one of the things that I learned from this book, and it has helped me SO many times when dealing with someone whether life or ministry related.
I hope you'll get Looking Out/Looking In (even though it's considered a textbook),
and learn so many ways you can be communicating better.
We can ALL use some improvement in this area.
